Abstract
It is Pascal’s authoritarian approach to ethics in the Provinciales which determines in large part his uncompromising rejection of Jesuit moral theology and virtual surrender of the critical office of the conscience.1 He clearly regards the moral injunctions implicit in the Christian faith as forming part of what he believes is a revealed system of truth. Two factors contributing to this authoritarian approach are his conception of theology, the discipline which in his opinion properly concerns itself with revealed truth, and his estimate of human nature.
