Abstract
We may imagine that the Egyptian landscape during Neolithic and also Pharaonic times had the character of the Sudd region of the present Sudan, a river with marshy shores where huge papyrus thickets offered a splendid abode for hippopotami and crocodiles, for birds and other animals. It was the ideal hunting place for the Neolithic people, who moved about standing on their light papyrus rafts, probably identical to those still in use in parts of Central Africa.

Täckholm, V. Faraos Blomster (Stockholm 1951, 2 ed. 1964. Also a pocket ed. 1969). This is a richly illustrated popular book in Swedish on Pharaonic plants with an abbreviated selected bibliography for each chapter.
Lucas, A. Ancient Egyptian Materials and Industries (4 ed., revised and enlarged by J. R. Harris, London 1962). Here very good bibliographical information arranged in footnotes on all vegetable material used in ancient Egypt.
Loret, V. La Flora Pharaonique (2 ed., Paris 1892, recently reprinted photographically). This is an old classical work of great value, also dealing with the Hieroglyphic names of the plants.
Keimer, L. Die Gartenpflanzen im alten Ägypten. 1. (Berlin 1924. Recently reprinted photographically.) Also a work of great value made with the advice of G. Schweinfurth, who was then alive. Unfortunately the work was interrupted after Schweinfurth’s death in 1925. The author has later published at least 100 pamphlets or more on the ancient flora, and to his death in recent years he was considered one of the greatest authorities on this subject.
