Abstract
The landmass of Africa is old and the river systems have evolved over long periods of time. Most of the great rivers occupy basins which in part have been carved out by the rivers but are also large down-warps in the earth’s crust. The broad character of river basins have thus evolved over tens of millions of years of geological time and involved major geophysical events; while the details of the river’s course have often evolved within a few tens or hundreds of thousands of years of time and mostly are recorded in erosional-depositional events.
