Abstract
The papers on the Northern or Subvariscan province (Smith, van Adrichem Boogaert) published in the proceedings confirm the results received up to now, namely that the upper sequence of the Lower Permian has been deposited under a semiarid to arid climate. Palaeogeographically this sequence represents an alluvial plain basinwards of the coast with sheet floods and an intermittent dune zone which is followed by a sebka-line zone and finally by salt lakes. With appearance of a coarse marginal facies this landscape continues into East to Southeast direction into the northern part of GDR. At the East margin of the Harz it is connected with the Central or Variscan province. For that region unfortunately a paper from the GDR was not available. Nevertheless, the lower sequence of the Lower Permian in this basin is principally composed of volcanic rocks of acid to basic character. These volcanics obviously extend up to the northwestern part of the basin located close to Scotland. To what extent they are connected with those in the Oslograben which demonstrates remarkable fault tectonics (Oftedahl) is not known as there is the Fünenridge between both areas. In this whole NW-SE extending area it is difficult to draw the boundary between the Lower Permian and the Stephanian. The “Saalian”unconformity at the top of the volcanic rocks has not yet been proved completely. The boundary between Upper Rotliegend and Zechstein, however, is defined by use of the copper shale (Falke).
