Abstract
Asphyxia neonatorum is a traditional, though not absolutely accurate, term applied to respiratory disorders at birth, associated with hypoxaemia (cyanosis) and hypoxia manifested mainly in depression of nervous functions (atonia, areflexia). A newborn infant who fails to make respiratory efforts within 30 seconds, or to breathe rhythmically within 90 seconds, can be described as asphyxiated.
