Summary
In describing the particular situation and needs of elderly people, esp. with respect to their health status, it is shown in which way poverty tends to increase dependency. The economic situation is seen as a function of three factors: the economic resources of the individual household, the availability of appropriate social services, and the actual use made of the available financial resources and the services. By the treatment of these dimensions and their relevance for elderly people the actual situation of elderly people in the Federal Republic of Germany is presented with an emphasis on recent improvements and still existing deficiencies.
