Abstract
If Le Grand d’Aussy’s interest in medieval French literature was very much that of the historian, then it was that of the historian moved essentially by patriotism. Almost invariably the object of his researches was “la Nation” and he was never afraid to show his feelings for his homeland:
Oui. J’aime mon pays avec transport, il est vrai; je me glorifie d’être François, et ne vois sur la terre aucune nation chez laquelle je désirerois de préférence que la nature eût placé mon berceau.1
