Abstract
The ecomorphological classification of nekton was discussed in chapter I, where definitions and brief characteristics of the four ecomorphological classes of nekton were given as well as the class definitions of other ecomorphological types of bionts related to nekton. In the present chapter, on the basis of the above analysis (chapters IIIāVIII) of the basic nektonic adaptations, we characterize the nektonic classes in greater detail and examine their origins, without which it is impossible to go into the characteristics of the emergence and development of nekton as a whole for particular bodies of water, which are the subject of chapter X. Below, when describing individual classes of nekton, we shall avoid repeating the overall characteristics of nekton already described in preceding chapters, and shall endeavour to stress only those which are specific to and characteristic of the class in question, and indeed make up its distinctive features.
