Taxonomie und Faunistik der Stechmücken — von der Medizinischen Entomologie kritisch beleuchtet (Mit allgemeinen Überlegungen über die Relevanz von Taxonomie und Faunistik)

Summary

It is demonstrated that taxonomy and faunistics of mosquitoes are of essential importance for medical entomology only under the premise that the results of these scientific branches can be integrated into current problems, mainly control measures against diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. This is particularly shown by those factors which have to be taken into consideration when controlling arbovirus infections.

Unfortunately taxonomic and faunistic studies are often carried out in a way isolated from other biological sciences. Integration does, of course, not necessarily mean application but at least true connection. From a more general point of view this problem and the necessary steps for an improvement of the sometimes bad image of taxonomy and faunistics are discussed.
