The Influence of Fertilizers on the Plant Communities of Mesophytic Grasslands

  • Chapter
Application of Vegetation Science to Grassland Husbandry

Part of the book series: Handbook of Vegetation Science ((HAVS,volume 13))

Abstract

Organic fertilizers (manure, guile) have long been used for improvement of grasslands in a number of West-European countries, in the Lake Baikal regions (Prebaikalye and Transbaikalye), in some mountainous regions of the Caucasus and Middle Asia (in arid areas in conjunction with irrigation). On the basis of a comparative study in field conditions of adjacent meadows, fertilized and unfertilized, Stebler & Schröter (1887) established the main regularities of the change of meadow vegetation under the influence of fertilizers.
