Abstract
The parasympathetic nervous system and its manipulation by drugs have been associated now for a century, since the introduction of pilocarpine in 1876 by Weber. This drug, a directly-acting parasympathomimetic, has, despite its many drawbacks, maintained its front-line position in the ophthalmologist’s armamentarium. Now, however, after this lapse of time during which many alternative therapeutic and surgical measures have appeared and (many) disappeared some of pilocarpine’s drawbacks are now yielding to the advances in the modifications of delivery systems (see Heilmann, this symposium).
