Abstract

The effects of diffusion on reaction rates are studied by the concentration gradient approach. The treatment covers the range from diffusion controlled to more conventional kinetics, and includes the case of reacting particles that interact through long range forces. A general expression for the rate constant is derived. The concept of reencounters are introduced and the probability density of a reencounter is calculated for free diffusion.
