Abstract
The theoretical background for these experiments is developed in terms of the general theory proposed by Pedersen and Freed. The experiments are performed either in the time domain or in the frequency domain with high intensity light sources. Of crucial importance is the generation of intense light pulses of a shape conducive to quantitative interpretation of the experimental data. The ESR spectrometer is operated at constant magnetic field and with a response time much larger than the radical spin-lattice relaxation time. Time-averaging is necessary for experiments in the time domain. The experiments have demonstrated the existence of both a triplet mechanism (TM) and a radical pair mechanism (RPM) for generation of polarization. Data from recent experiments in the time domain and in the frequency domain are in good agreement with the microscopic theory.

The polarization ratio P in Ref. 17 is equal to-V(I)(1+V(R))-1 in our notation. This identification is approximate only since no allowance is made for spectrometer response.
If we make the identification in Ref. 22 and further assume that-V2(R) = V2, (R) where -2 and +2 are corresponding low and high-field fines we can calculate the following values for the 1, 4-naphthosemiquinone radical in Ref. 17, Table I:.
