Abstract

There has been a number of review articles dealing with the subject covered by the title of this paper, for example Banks (1966), Dalgarno (1969) and Takayanagi and Itikawa (1970). Electron collisions and energy transfer in our ionosphere has been of great interest for many years, particularly in view of the cross-modulation phenomenon used in ionospheric research as a diagnostic tool for probing electron density, collision frequency and the energy loss coefficient (G-factor). A summary of all the work that has been done in this field up to 1969 has been given by Fejer (1969). Whereas the earlier cross-modulation experiments were mainly aimed at perturbing the ionosphere by moderately increasing the electron temperature the interest in recent years has shifted towards making substantial changes of the ionosphere by exposing it to the radiation from high power ground based transmitters.
