Non-Spot Magnetic Fields

The notion that the Sun should have a permanent dipolar magnetic field arose in the last century. Modern observations cast doubt on the existence of such a field. Today, the term general magnetic field is often used interchangeably with polar field. The problem of determining the existence of a true general magnetic field is that of eliminating the effect of transient magnetic fields which collect near the poles.
