Mental Episodes

Part of the Synthese Library book series (SYLI, volume 116)

One of our main concerns in this book is a study of the intention-belief-action triangle of concepts or, perhaps better, actions and their (causal) determination by activated conative and doxastic states. Therefore, we obviously have to discuss the nature of conative and doxastic attitudes at some length. We shall see below that these concepts can be construed as theoretico-reportive concepts so that there will be conceptual connections between attitude concepts and action concepts. What is more, it will be argued that in the case of wants and intentions it is a conceptual truth that they are, among other things, states causing behavior in suitable circumstances.
