Influence of Jahn-Teller Ions on Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Ferrimagnets

  • Chapter
Vibronic Interactions: Jahn-Teller Effect in Crystals and Molecules

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((NAII,volume 39))

Abstract

Spin-lattice relaxation in ferrites can be enhanced by 3dn ions with t 2g orbital Jahn-Teller effect capabilities. When exchange-ordered, Mn3+, Fe2+, Co2+, Cu2+ can stabilize orbital doublets from the t 2g shell by spin-orbit interactions. This occurrence can also account for observed magnetoelastic effects.
