Abstract
Since coastal erosion can have dramatic impacts, understanding the evolution of the nearshore zone, beach, and dunes can improve coastal management. We describe the use of geostatistical techniques for modelling the variations of their bathymetry or topography in space and time. The study used data sampled to the north of the Dutch island of Terschelling over a period of 28 years. The geostatistical analysis includes detrending techniques, variography in the spatial domain and in time, variography of the bathymetrie variation between two successive years, and calculation of variogram maps. A factorized model provided a satisfactory fit where the spatio-temporal covariance is the product of a covariance in space by a covariance in time. This model can be exploited to design sampling patterns according to a given objective and a required accuracy, as illustrated with examples.
