Abstract

The effects of magnetic impurities and the possibility of magnetic ordering in superconductors has had a rich and interesting history. In the early days, magnetic impurities substituted into a superconductor were found to quickly suppress superconductivity,[l] and this was understood in terms of the strong spin scattering of the impurity spins that disrupts the Cooper pair formation.[2] Typically ~1% substitution was enough to completely extinguish the superconducting state, and such a low concentration of magnetic moments precludes the possibility of cooperative magnetic states forming and competing with the superconducting order parameter.
