Abstract

This chapter examines nursing work and nurses at work. Recent developments in health care, policy and practice in the United Kingdom (UK) and implications for the nature of nursing work are outlined. Definitions of competence and performance are considered and operationalised for nursing. A selection of empirical work assessing nurse competence and performance is reviewed and an eclectic approach is recommended, using multiple methods and multiple sources of evidence to examine nurses’ knowledge, skills and attitudes. The chapter concludes with implications for education, practice and policy.
