Abstract

THE definitive and complete early history of tribology has been, written by (1979). He wisely focused on authors and events that have withstood the test of scientific and technological relevance. Some examples in his writing display the ingenuity of man in such items as support-pivots for the gates of ancient cities, the axles of chariots and wagons, and various articles of war. These items may seem mundane to us but they were vital for survival at the time. Friction was a major concern of that day because motive power was supplied largely by people or animals.
