Abstract

For the majority of metal halides the solid state is the natural state; they are involatile ionic crystals, with high coordination number of the metal, and no discernible “molecules.” There are only a few covalent metal halides for which molecules can be distinguished in their crystals. Thus, when we talk about the molecular structure of metal halides, we usually refer to their vapors; it is there, where molecules of metal halide are present.
