Abstract
The rotational spectrum as a function of compression in solid hydrogen of various ortho-para compositions has been considered on the basis of inferences made from available experimental findings. Special attention is called to the role that can be played by a rank-4 crystal field, in particular, for the pressure-driven phase transition. Analysis of the rotational spectrum in mixed ortho-para crystals allowed suggestion of a new conversion mechanism to explain the recently documented huge conversion enhancement in solid hydrogen at high pressures.
