Descartes on the Will and the Power to do Otherwise

  • Chapter
Emotions and Choice from Boethius to Descartes

Part of the book series: Studies in the History of Philosophy of Mind ((SHPM,volume 1))

Abstract

Of the many claims which Descartes’s rationalist followers have found problematic some of his pronouncements on the will are the most controversial. Among the examples the first is a remark in Descartes’s earliest, unpublished notes (1619-20?) found by Leibniz:

Tria mitabilia fecit Dominus: res ex nihilo liberum arbitrium et hominem deum. (The Lord made three marvels: things out of nothing, free choice and God in Man. AT X, 218.)
