Abstract
Sustainable development is “continuously unfolding pathway for change centred on bringing environmental, economic and social considerations to the core of our understanding of social and personal development. Potentially, this involves the reconfiguration of industrial activity” (Roome, 1998). This implies the integration of environmental information with economic, social and technological aspects in decision-making processes, see Figure 1.1. This book is concerned withassessment tools for the environmental dimension of sustainable development, as an aid to business decision-making, providing information to guide the directions for sustainable development. It will focus on the overlap of the scientific circle of the diagram with the two other circles.
