Structure and Properties of Materials

  • Chapter
Biomaterials

Abstract

The performance of an implant material depends upon both bulk and surface properties. There is increasing recognition that a biomaterial must exhibit a specific surface behavior in addition to the necessary bulk properties in order to minimize interfacial problems with host tissues and fluids. The structure, surface chemistry and physical properties of solid biomaterials are discussed in this chapter.
