Abstract

The Astronomy and Astrophysics Survey Committee has recommended an ambitious program of ground-based and space-based initiatives to enable continued exploration of the universe in the coming decade. The top recommendation is the Next Generation Space Telescope, which will study the dawn of the modern universe. Small telescopes will make key contributions to the surveys that will be archived in the National Virtual Observatory, the top-ranked small initiative. In addition to their research role, small telescopes are essential for education and for training the next generation of instrumentalists.
