Abstract
During recent decades the emphasis of research relating to nitrogen metabolism in liver disease has shifted from enzymology and aspects of the function of organs towards molecular and cell biology and, most recently, towards the integrated approach of systems biology. These developments have been associated with an enormous increase in knowledge, especially with regard to the role of nitrogenous compounds as signal molecules. Only a few aspects of this current research, to which our group has contributed, are described in this chapter.
