Abstract
In Western countries in particular, and in the growing Green movement in the Eastern countries as well, how risks are regulated is a key component to the management of Cold War legacies. Regulatory approaches that allow site-specific risk analysis must be considered because regulations and associated guidance are often the basis for defining acceptable cleanup levels. This chapter provides an example of how one regulatory group has approached this issue. The example shows how generic regulatory guidelines can be implemented in a manner that allows for site-specific risk-based evaluations of cleanup levels.
