Abstract

The concept of an orbital ‘blow-out’ as a mechanism of orbital floor fracture, has been widely recognized and accepted since the classic paper of Smith & Regan (Smith & Regan, 1957; Reny & Strieker, 1969; Hollwich et al., 1970; Lerman, 1970). The diagnostic and therapeutic problems were thoroughly discussed during the 1969 Symposium (Bleeker & Lyle, 1970). It should be remembered, however, that depending on the type of accident, we often find additional disturbances of ocular motility. These can be caused by a posttraumatic Brown’s syndrome, central or peripheral nerve palsies and/or changes in the orbital soft tissue.
