Abstract
This paper describes a remote sensing system which is based on active differential absorption measurements in the IR spectral region. As a first step towards a spaceborne system an airborne model equipped with two tunable cw CO2 lasers has been developed and succesfully tried at flight altitudes from 300 m to 1200 m. By extrapolating the measured data one can conclude that the measuring range may well be extended to Spacelab altitudes. The system can be used not only for analysis of atmospheric trace gases but also for petrographic mapping of the uncovered ground by differential reflection spectroscopy in the reststrahlen bands. Fundamental spectroscopic data have been provided by measuring the pressure-dependent absorption cross-sections of relevant molecular gases for a set of discrete laser wavelengths.
