Abstract

Many processes and many types of observations are relevant to an understanding of star formation. In these lectures I shall attempt to sketch briefly some of the problems involved and some results, mostly theoretical, of studies of star formation, concentrating on qualitative or “back-of-the-envelope” aspects. The first lecture will consider the collapse of individual protostars, as understood mainly from spherical collapse models; the second will consider multidimensional collapse and the fragmentation problem; and the third will consider some aspects of star formation on a galactic scale.
