Abstract
In a Danish dairy herd of 350 milking cows the respiratory disease (rd) situation among calves up to the age of 6 months was analysed. During a 3 year period a total of 1 010 single calves were born. The rd mortality rate in the herd was 9%. Approximately 85–90% of the fatal cases of rd occurred after the third week of life. Rd accounted for approximately 50% of the economic loss per calf.
This investigation was carried out in cooperation with. Claus M. Willadsen, Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen, Denmark, and L. Gjøl Christensen, National Cattle Research Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark.
