Abstract
By virtue of its geographical distribution and the quantities of energy which could be tapped, the possible overall contribution of geothermal energy towards meeting Europe’s future energy requirements is much smaller than that of solar energy, but it will not be negligible on a local scale. As far as Europe is concerned, geothermal energy is exploited only in Italy (electricity generation from steam) and in France (space heating with hot water).
