Abstract

This is the impressive pose assumed by the hero of our story, whose formal written French makes it seem all the more a conscious attitude, though at the same time it is more than a pose, for he is plying his pen while the tempest roars and rages about him, for days and, finally, weeks on end, in mid-Atlantic, literally saevis tranquillus in undis.

This article is the slightly shortened version of J.W. Schulte Nordholt, ‘Gijsbert Karel Van Hogendorp in Amerika 1783–1784’, Tijdschrift voor geschiedenis, LXXXVIII (Groningen, 1975) 39–62.
