Light Changes of Eclipsing Binary Systems: Spherical Stars

  • Chapter
Language of the Stars

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 77))

Abstract

In order to embark on the task just set forth, our first aim will be to outline a geometrical theory of eclipsing binary systems consisting of components which can be regarded as spheres. At the first sight, the problem so restricted might seem to suffer from serious limitations: for how can two stars finding themselves in the proximity of each other retain a spherical shape? This objection is true in principle; and a discussion of its limitations will be taken up in Chapter II.
