Abstract

The lunar soil — regolith — is a loose surface layer of the Moon, composed of fragmentary material of various sizes (including boulders), some of which was transported from the place of its original occurrence. This heterogeneous mixture, dark-gray or black in the maria and light-gray in the highlands, consists of minute fragments of crystalline rocks and minerals, of welded and brecciated agglomerates and partly melted particles. The average size of regolith particles (i.e. < 1 mm) is controlled by the degree of its exogenic reworking; it varies between 60 and 100 μm as a rule.
