Abstract

Before setting out to examine Marx’s conception of culture, and we can only make a tentative attempt in that direction here, quite legitimate doubts as to the very formulation of the subject must be raised. Marx himself used the actual term ‘culture’ very seldom, and it failed to find a place in his basic terminology. To begin with, therefore, we must decide whether there is a sufficient case for attempting a reconsideration of parts of Marx’s sociological analyses in terms of the sociology of culture. Secondly, we must arrive at a conclusion as to the place of these analyses in the body of the general theory of sociology of culture.

Much attention was paid at the conference to the problems of definition, and the general conception of culture seemed to predominate, although the problem of criteria for the distinction of different fields and levels of culture was also discussed.
