Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to show how physical principles and concepts may contribute to a better understanding about measurements of acoustic cardiac phenomena and of blood pressures in the systemic circulation (Fig. 2.1). The choice of this subject is not without ratio because certain aspects of the usual method for measuring blood pressure involve physical principles which at the same time are needed to understand what the dynamics of the blood transport means for the interpretation of the measured values. The circulation itself is further a fertile subject for illustrating how physical reasoning and theoretical treatment can contribute to the understanding of, first, the functioning of a biological system, but, also, of the limitations implied in its complexity.
