Abstract
The history of the Curaçao islands under Spanish dominion is closely related to that of Venezuela and cannot be considered separately. With a real cédula, a royal decree, of June 8, 1501, the Catholic kings united the coastal regions of Coquibacoa (Coro) and Guajira with the recently acquired islands and appointed Alonso de Ojeda as Factor or royal representative over the area. Among the instructions it was specified that settlements be made along the entire coast, presumably also on the islands, although this was not mentioned outright.
