Abstract

On January 27, r8r6, the new Governor General of the Curaçao islands, Albert Kikkert, arrived with his staff aboard the Prince of Orange, a Dutch man-of-war. Having been Willemstad’s harbor commander from 1795 to r800 and married to the daughter of a prominent Curaçao family, his was a well-known figure to the local inhabitants. In addition, Kikkert’s grasp of insular affairs had few equals.
