Abstract
Little is known about Surinam’s pre-Columbian inhabitants. Cave sketches, the timehri, discovered near the Marowine and Corantine rivers reveal the former presence of Indian tribes whom ethnologists, on ethnic as well as other grounds, have traced to the Arawaks rather than to the more nomadic Caribs. Their kitchen-mounds are reminiscent of similar waste mounds foundamong the Toltecs of Mexico, although wether this apparent link is significant has yet to be determined.
