Synagogues and churches in changing communities: What role can they play in stabilization efforts?

The previous four chapters have examined the characteristics of the racial transition process. In this chapter, the focus shifts to the feasibility of efforts at the community level to achieve stable integrated communities. Since churches and synagogues are among the most important institutions in these communities, it is important that they be involved in stabilization efforts. A key question which has not received much attention by researchers is the extent to which these religious institutions would gain or lose support as a result of participation in such efforts. This chapter will be aimed at closing this gap in existing research.
