Abstract

Numerous reports in the literature confirm the fact that salvage of patients with colorectal cancer treated by surgical resection has reached a plateau in the past decades. There is no doubt that early detection, screening of the population-at-risk and awareness of the need to perform ‘good’ cancer surgery are possible means of increasing the survival rate. The duration of survival and the cure rate are neat statistical data that everybody tries to improve. However, for those patients for whom surgery was not curative, the quality of life during the remaining years is equally important as the duration of survival.
