Abstract
The flexible colonoscope has greatly reduced the need and altered the indications for major surgical procedures in the treatment of colonic polypoid lesions. There are relatively few remaining indications for laparotomy in their treatment: 1) the pedunculated polyp that cannot be reached or visualized by the colonoscopist, 2) multiple (arbitrarily more than ten) polyps in one segment, or in a young person, especially with a familial history, when they are scattered throughout the colon, 3) sessile polyps greater than 2 cm in size and some smaller ones that cannot be removed satisfactorily via the flexible colonoscope, 4) the pedunculated polyp which after removal is found to contain clinically significant cancer.
