Abstract
The lexicon is one of the knowledge sources which has to be taken into account in a speech recognition/understanding system. The organization of the two kinds of lexicon -non phonological and phonological- is first discussed. We then present the techniques involved in the use of a lexicon for emitting and verifying word hypotheses: word verification and word spotting. Examples from actual systems illustrate the various aspects of the paper.
