Abstract

The period since ∿1976 has seen a rapid development in the study of X-ray emission from active galaxies. At that time, based mainly on sources in the third Uhuru (3U) catalogue (Giacconi et al.,1974), only 4 active galaxies had been reliably identified as X-ray emitters (viz. 3C 273, NGC 4151, NGC 5128 and M 87), with the possible association of a 3U source with 4 others (NGC 1275, Cyg A, 3C 390.3 and M 82). By the end of 1978, this number had increased to more than 50, forming a second major class of extragalactic X-ray emitter, comparable in number (and range of luminosity) to the galaxy clusters. Many of these new identifications are from the Ariel V Sky Survey and are based on sources listed in the “2A” catalogue (Cooke et al.,1978a). Other recent additions have come from X-ray observations with the SAS-3, OSO-8 and HEAO-1 satellites, together with the revised and considerably extended Uhuru (4U) catalogue (Forman et al., 1978).
