Abstract
A short introduction to surfactant and micellar systems is given. A discussion of selected examples of micellar solubilization and catalysis studies with emphasis placed on nmr spectroscopic results is presented. The utility of nmr spectroscopy as well as its current status in investigations of micellar solutions is critically described.
The primary objective of this paper is to summarize the uses and utility of nmr spectroscopy for ther investigation of micellar solubilization and catalysis. A brief outline of the topics to be covered includes micellar structure, solubilization sites in micelles, and micellar catalysis. With regard to micellar catalysis there are three basic questions to be asked. (1) What is micellar catalysis? (2) Why does micellar catalysis occur? (3) How can spectroscopic and thermodynamic techniques, with special emphasis on nmr, be used to determine the solubilization sites of the substrate in the micelle and the groups involved in this process, the mobility of both the substrate and the aggregate, and the type of interaction or interactions involved in the binding and/or solubilization of the substrate in a micellar solution?
