Abstract

Texts are manifestations of language in use. In the attempt to describe the use of linguistic expressions in a text, the linguist must relate the communicative function of the text to its grammatical structure. The more comprehensive and less definite the text to be described, the more difficult the task of stating this relationship. Therefore, it is advisable, given the current status of linguistics and communications research, to begin with short texts that have a clearly definable communicative function.1
