Abstract
During our first month in New Mexico, in the Spring of 1943, we stayed in a plush ranch in the Nambe Valley because the house we were assigned at Los Alamos was being used by young bachelor workmen and we could not move in yet. On our trips to the site we would drive past the Black Mesa, which seemed to me like a wonderful sentinel, guarding the Indian pueblos so near. The chamiso and the tumbleweeds going along made this wonderful country even more picturesque. We would cross the Rio Grande River on the Otowi Bridge, and ascend into spectacular mountains, with sheer drops, interesting formations, little buttes, and mesas. Only the terrifyingly narrow road detracted from the view.
